Alright so I’ve set some goals for 2018 before NOC but really, most of it were kinda natural. Which is kinda good I guess but also not good cuz it means I didn’t put in effort to do those that are harder to do without the program. Does that mean I will have to put in more effort when I head back? Yeah I think so. But this year has been so life-changing, living abroad and it got me thinking a lot about how I want my future to be like. Sigh it’s gonna be really hard to decide what to do after graduating and where to settle etc.

I think I still have 1 year to decide but I really should keep testing myself and trying different ways to live in order to know what I want. Just do and see what happens, never try never know.

NOC has taught me so much and this rushed resolutions page doesn’t do much justice to my year. I should sit down and reflect next week when my friends and parents have left Vancouver. But for now I just think I really enjoyed myself and opened my eyes to a whole new world. There are so many things that have changed me this year in terms of the way I think and view things, even though I don’t consciously keep track of the things I do and think about.

I am so, so thankful for the opportunity for this year. No regrets, no sadness because I know that it was a beautiful year and I will be working hard to get a life that I want in the coming years. It was definitely the company that made it so much better, and I will not deny that if I came back to the Bay alone, everything will be so different. I have learnt so much about myself and others from living with people, and humbled by the great things people do. But I just love making so many friends. I only wished I had more discipline to make myself go out and make more friends outside of Singaporeans. Nevertheless, I’m happy to reconnect with friends who dropped by, and also make new friends in the meantime. I learnt what I love and what I don’t, how I live, etc. There’s definitely much more to learn but I believe I have spent my year fruitfully and thus no regrets. I am very, very lucky to be here.

I’ve learnt to overcome a bit of that imposter syndrome and understand that everyone has their strengths. I do feel a lot more confident about myself but I believe I can work on it more in terms of talking to strangers. I also need to catch up on entertainment (lol first time hear this) – but I realised it’s really a good glue for making friends.

2019

In my last year of school, I really want to get things straight and understand what I want to do with my time. I have been allowing myself to go with the flow for the past few years because I’ve been given too much free will. I just let myself do what I like – hang out with friends and sleeping…. So I really want to ADULT and TAKE CONTROL this year.

Live life to the fullest yes, but to make it even fuller I need to work harder on skills. No matter what interest it is, I need to make a good effort to improve on it to be satisfied. If I want to dance, I better practice and make sure I go for classes. If I want to improve on my engineering for career, I better go do some projects and not just let my classes dictate my life.

My year in 3 parts – one sem in hall, summer intern, one sem chilling in school without hall + finding job.

[ ] Find and do a fulfilling summer internship, hopefully in Canada/USA

[ ] Build my portfolio – UI/UX, programming

  • Do my own UI/UX rebranding projects
  • Consolidate my work
  • Write code for startup ideas
  • Do UI/UX work for people

[ ] Train hard on volleyball / find a fitness regime no matter what sport it is. Gym works too

  • Dedicate some time to it regularly

[ ] Spanish!!!

  • Dedicate some time to it regularly

[ ] Be very very conscious of my relationship with people, make each interaction MATTER.

  • Make sure I thank people for things
  • Be grateful for them ALL THE TIME, show gratitude in ways they will appreciate
  • Help people wholeheartedly and passionately, but know how to reject politely when unable to do so

[ ] Build real networking relationships for career

  • Go for events
  • Talk to people about ideas
  • READ more and talk more about them again
  • Ask people out for coffee

[ ] Bring Bay Area to Singapore (Personal)

  • Talk to strangers about ideas
  • Diversity, Inclusivity, understand the real reason and how to adapt it
  • Culture culture culture, ask why, probe more
  • Independent, think beyond small matters (no complaining, gossiping)
  • Make new friends and SHOW UP
  • We are all HUMANS!! Look at everyone like they’re real people with stories
  • Just Do It.
  • Personal wellness comes first
  • Stop going with the flow subconsciously
  • Always find a better way to do things, stop being satisfied with status quo

[ ] Bring Bay Area to Singapore (Community)

  • Do social good
  • Women in Tech, Kids in Tech
  • Be involved in events and talk to people about what they think about sg
  • Work on some startup ideas – Women in Tech, Snipped, etc
  • Talk to startups in SG and analyze them

[ ] Self-discipline

  • Actually make habits WORK
  • Build routine slowly but steadily

Kaising’18 OUT!

2017 Review + 2018 Resolutions

Hurray! It’s the start of a new year again!

This year has been a helluva ride. First of starting 2017 with bf in NOC Beijing, then my horrendous internship. But I would say it has been a fruitful year with great breakthroughs, but I feel that I could have done better in the second half. But first half was pretty amazing 🙂

2017 REVIEW

[X] Get in to NOC for SV

It’s ridiculous if I come into NUS for NOC and I don’t work hard for it. The last interview was a flop and I really think I’m capable of getting NOC. I need to know what I want and then tell the interviewers exactly that.

  1. Practise Interview Skills [X]
  2. Do well in ExchangeBuddy [ ]Finish tasks on time [ ]
      1. Learn as much as possible from colleagues [ ]
      2. Figure out what I want to work on [ ]
  3. Think of my own start up ideas and how to do it
  4. Prepare content for interview [X]

Yeap. I finally got it after 3 tries. When I wrote this, I failed again in the first half of the year, and then finally got it in September when I decided to try my luck during IA. And thankfully I did, and I’m finally fulfilling my dream of going to SV. But right now, everything feels rather surreal and honestly after giving up the idea of pursuing SV mid-year and focusing my energy on other parts of my life, now SV seems just like another opportunity to me. I used to thing it was THE ONE I have to go for. But now I just know its not something I must have in order to succeed. I think having an open mind like this helps me to prioritise things better and put things into perspective. Leaving in 3 days. Will miss everyone, unsure of whats about to come, but I will do my best.

[X] Get my CAP above 4.0

5 modules, 22 MCs. No excuses to fall below sem 3’s expectations. I will do well in DCP and also be consistent in my other modules.

  1. Don’t snowball during IHG
  2. Plan my roadmap (NOC vs Exchange)
  3. Take initiative for my projects

Y2S2 was pretty good. I spent most of my time in school and doing project with Gauri. I realised how studying with CEG people helped me to keep up and also be more disciplined. I also cut down on hall activities after IHG. Also, was proud of my captainship during IHG with Shirlene. I feel that we did a good job making the team bonded and play happily. Although we didn’t win, but we created a great experience and (rather) disciplined team.

Back to academics, I worked pretty hard I guess. Pupu wasn’t around so I had more time for planning and also for friends. As such, I had more outside exposure which made me more motivated. Yeah, so I guess some time out alone is pretty alright! (But not sure about one year lol)

However, not so happy about my performance for DCP. In Y2S2 there was nothing much, but Y3S1 I didn’t do much probably as I was too tired from IA. But in the end I think it all came down to whether I really wanted to do it well and I guess I didn’t. Or maybe I couldn’t multi-task. I was also unwilling to sacrifice my sleep time and free time for it I guess. However, luckily I could contribute in terms of presentation and selling the idea I guess. Oh well A- is not too bad anyway.

[ ] Fitness + get in shape + health

Gotta lose belly fat then I happy already. But then they said that fitness is not just about looking good but a way of life. Imma achieve that way of life man.

  1. Saturday Yoga sessions with Xiao Qi after CNY
  2. Running with Rooftop BBs/Anyone in hall
  3. Go for dance classes
  4. Breakfast everyday + supper only once a week
  5. Learn to resist temptation

Nope. Nothing happened. Ok at least I did the breakfast part almost everyday till the last few months. And really almost no supper.

[ ] Social Skills – Be less awkward and more confident

Heard that saying hello to people to start off the day helps in making me more talkative for the rest of the day. Gonna talk to people more often. Think I’m doing quite okay recently. Just need to be more energetic.

Didn’t really do much about this lol.

[-] Do one thing that scares me everyday

For example..

  1. Talk to strangers/people that I get intimidated by often
  2. Eat something different everyday
  3. Do tutorials LOL [X]
  4. Do things alone more often

I tried la I tried… But still never really put much effort into this.

[X] Freaking awesome 21st Party

Gotta start planning soon haha.

I guess it was not bad. Supposed to be at rooftop but it rained… But I guess everyone had fun tho I really toh-ed. Glad I managed to pull this through before finals and I’m glad teammies was willing to help! ❤

[ ] Start playing with my hobbies

Who knows I might be able to make a living out of them

  1. Making Dream Catchers
  2. Brush Lettering
  3. Random art stuff on pinterest
  4. Making and printing nice posters
  5. Decorating my room
  6. Skateboarding (kinda)

Nope. Didn’t make time for them at all. Only at the end of the year for pupu’s planner I did some watercolouring.

2018 RESOLUTIONS

Yeah…. so it was not too bad at least I got my main goals done. I really need to buck up on finding passion and self-discipline. Always doing what I do is not the way to continue the next few “young” years. This year I learnt to be kinder to people, be more appreciative of my friends, spend more time with family. I also learnt that working is tough, not to take things for granted, and the importance of working hard and having plans. I had times when I really got my days planned out, but when I got tired I just didn’t bother. It’s really not easy to maintain a habit.

So here’s my 2018 goals!! (In Silicon Valley!!)

[ ] Maintain relationship with loved ones

  1. Call pupu, papa, mama at least once a week.
  2. Ask my friends how they doing and keep up with their lives
  3. No crying

[ ] Do something that scares me everyday

  1. Talk to strangers. Understand how to start meaningful conversations and try them.
  2. Be confident in speaking. No mumbling
  3. Drive.
  4. Try something new.

[ ] Make 3 close foreign friends

[ ] Smooth driving experience. Careful and confident driving

[ ] Contribute something significant to my company

  1. Improve in software engineering
  2. Build a legit design and UI/UX portfolio
  3. Make improvements in relationships within company
  4. Learn some marketing and start-up skills

[ ] Fitness

  1. Pick up a new sport/activity
  2. Dance classes and improve in dance
  3. Have a regular fitness regime (Can be gym or running)

[ ] Be conversational in Spanish

  1. Duolingo and Tandem
  2. Keep a notebook for it

[ ] Hobbies

  1. Video-editing, filming for YouTube. Content-creating
  2. Improve photography skills by using my camera more often
  3. Write blog and think about issues regularly. Read news and opinions.
  4. Watercolouring

[ ] NOC – Have some headway on a startup idea.

[ ] Develop 3 good habits

  1. Can be fitness, health, or mind

[ ] Be the best in everything I do

I just hope 2018 will be the turning point in my life, and I hope to get motivation and sustain it for when I come back to Singapore 🙂

2016 Review + 2017 New Year Resolution

I realised I damn lame I put my review on the main blog and my resolution here. So now I’m gonna just put every new year shit here.

So let’s look at my 2016 Resolution and see what I have accomplished:

Life Habits

[ ] Stop being lazy
[ ] Keep track of spending
[ ] Sleeping hours
[] Stop wasting time on trivial things like social media

Goals

[kinda drop by 0.04 but im ok] CAP maintain or better
[x] Visit friends in London/ Go overseas with friends (batam trip only sian)
[x] Meal with family at least once a week
[x] Pass my damn driving test
[ ] Attend more academic-related events and talks
[ ] Always be on task
[bad orbital exp] Do internship during summer break
[?] Focus my energy on only the important stuff
[FFFFF I didnt sigh.] Lose belly fat + work on fitness
[x] Keep in touch with old friends, make new friends and get closer to them
[ ] Start on dance classes every week after IHG
[?] Be more interested in people

Plans

[?kinda] Make conscious effort to prepare for breakfast everyday
[x] Don’t go back hall during school hours until 6 unless got meeting or whatever, find somewhere to study/ do work
[ ] Finish tutorials on weekends
[x] Supper at most once a week
[ ] Sleep before 2am, wake up at 8am
[ ] Start studying at 10pm if no meeting or trainings
[ ] Be conscious of my spending, set a savings plan

Walao I suck sia. I realised I have too many small goals which may not be quantifiable so I think this year I’m just going to focus on the main stuff and set sub-goals. But before that, let’s do a summary of 2016!

1. Did my first IHG

was a nerve-wrecking experience as a vice captain not because of the responsibility but because of the scrutiny as an experienced player. I wanted to give my suggestions but it was mainly shot down with mockery and I just hated the fact that I had not much emotinal support from the team. But thank God I had Yutian and sometimes Cristal which made it better but in the end I was still figuring things out on my own because only I knew about my own experiences in volleyball. Of course I did learn a lot through the painful IHG preparation. I learnt how to be a smarter player and look out for weaknesses in the opponents. Also, despite being worse in skills and strength, I am better at judgement than before where I was just a follower in volleyball. All in all, bad experience but would not regret.

2. Got official with Yutian

and it was the lamest story to tell but I guess I still love him for being an unromantic but sweet boyfriend. He will never do any extravagant planning, or any at all, for our special days. But that’s because everyday is a special day to him. I hope we’ll have a smooth sailing relationship since he just flew off to Beijing. I will strive to be a better gf 🙂

3. Anyway before we got together we went JB and it was super fun!!! Really want to go again but didnt have the chance 😦

4. 20th birthday

with le bf at various restaurants and bars and he spent a lot on me and he still does lmao

5. Did Block Command

o.m.g. it was crazy tiring. And emotional.

6. Finals was alright.

SU-ed CS1020 lmao I suck at my core mods… But its alright I try my best

7. Then went to Hokkaido with parents,

nothing much happened there just that we cycled the wrong path at Biei and went 2 stations worth of train ride and got complained real bad by my dad and mum. But it was a beautiful scenery though.

8. Summer was spent on Orbital

which failed terribly, only got Vostok when we aimed Gemini. That’s because I was helpless and thus not motivated while my partner had a full time internship so he didn’t have much time as well.

9. Went for engincamp16 as OGL

and had a great deal of fun with new friends. I always enjoy mingling with engin people because they’re the realest. Happy to have made new friends in R House, which was a blessing in disguise since I wanted to go N hoeu with my engincamp15 friends. This was followed by a huge partying at fclub and Batam trip which was really really fun!! I love cable ski though I suck at it. 11/10 would go again.

10. Whole summer bb was busy at work so not much time spent together 😦

11. Moved in to new house. Still haven’t finished decorating sigh.

12. FWOC was fun and I love the new B block freshies although after FWOC and IBG and stepping down I didn’t really mingle with them. But I glad from the notes they gave I made a difference in their freshie life.

13. PANG GANG FROM BLOCKCOMM.

14. Captaincy for EnginVB and KRVB… Did not sign up for any of those.

15. Met new neighbours

Crystal and Bernice, then Yijun also moved in! But didn’t get to see her much owell. Thankful for them especially Crystal because she is really a joy to be around. And also Jess who is such a keeper friend but too bad she’s in 4th sigh.

16. This year I also got closer to many people

like Dayna and Stef from going out and also going for random things like YOLO run. Thanks Dayna for always jioing me out for stuff.

17. Still didn’t get into any dance CCAs. Confidence hit rock bottom but I’m gonna face my fears again soon.

18. School was tough but it was alright.

I prefer having more projects actually, it makes me feel like I’m doing real stuff. Had CS2103T, group mates were 5/7 and I’m really glad I had gone through this with them although we didn’t have a good grade… Nevertheless thankful to have made new CEGGIES friends!

19. DCP was fun,

but I know the next sem EG3301R will be crazy. It’s okay I’ll always get through the crazy.

20. Went for ULTRA 2016

with Stephen and Suting!! Had crazy party adventures with them but super fun hehe. Would totally go for Ultra again next year. Too bad I missed Zoukout 😦

21. First time puking from too much alcohol.

And the last time hopefully. Never gonna let people feed me cheap and pure hard liquor.

22. First time going to clubs with many DHS friends

omg and we used to judge people who club and drink.

23. Started first internship with ExchangeBuddy

24. Le bf left sg… 😦 LDR begins.

Overall I think I’m hitting some progress in life but I think I can do better. In 2017 it can only go up and I just really want to do my best and pick my battles wisely. Most importantly, I want to do well in EVERYTHING I do. If not don’t do. I’m gonna be a more organised person and live my life well.

Here’s my 2017 resolutions:

[ ] Get in to NOC for SV

It’s ridiculous if I come into NUS for NOC and I don’t work hard for it. The last interview was a flop and I really think I’m capable of getting NOC. I need to know what I want and then tell the interviewers exactly that.

Okay I think that’s it. I hope by the end of 2017 (I’ll be Year 3 omg.), I’ll be a better person and know better what I’ll be looking forward to in the future.

Signing off, KS from 2016 🙂
